Q: Do spider veins lead to varicose veins, and what can be done about them?
A: Spider veins are a common cosmetic problem. Some studies have suggested as many as 50 percent of women have them. They typically occur in the superficial veins on the ankles, calves and thighs, and according to Dr. Thomas Aston, a vein specialist, they are not always associated with varicose veins.
''Blood reflux in the long saphenous vein in the leg causes varicose veins, and sometimes the same process can also lead to spider veins,'' Aston said. ``However most spider veins are not due to this process.''
Instead, Aston says, spider veins are usually caused by hormones, like estrogen, or they are hereditary. Prolonged standing, weight gain and pregnancy can also increase the risk. Generally they are not painful and do not indicate a medical problem, however when they become a cosmetic concern, there is effective treatment.
''The recommended treatment is sclerotherapy, where radio frequency waves are used to close the spider vein. Lasers can do the same, but they often can leave an area of depigmentation, or a white spot on the skin,'' Aston said.
Good elastic socks may also help. If you'd like to find out more about spider veins, call Aston at the Vein Specialists of America, 561-338-3737.
